Did you know OS X Mountain Lion includes 44 ridiculously beautiful high resolution wallpapers? They’re hidden inside the four equally attractive new screen savers and feature some truly stunning scenery from National Geographic, the Hubble Space telescope, and some amazing photographers.
Each image is a whopping 3200×2000 resolution, here’s how to access these on your Mac:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.Framework/Versions/A/Resources/Default Collections/
A few thumbnail previews are shown below, but you really need to check them out yourself in full resolution, they’re stunning.
National Geographic:
Cosmos:
Aerial:
Nature Patterns:
You will find a handful that are also in the default OS X Mountain Lion wallpaper collection, but the vast majority are totally new
Mavericks tucks away 43 high-res images which it offers as screensaver options, and you can use as your wallpaper if you know where to look.
The huge wave image used as the default wallpaper for OS X Mavericks is certainly striking, but if you don’t harbor any particular affinity toward surfing, or the ocean in general, you have other options. OS X has some options readily available on the Desktop wallpaper screen in System Preferences, but you’ll notice there are different images available on its Screen Saver page, where it lists four Default Collections: National Geographic, aerial, cosmos, and nature patterns.
Count the images and you’ll see there are 43 images across those four screensaver collections. You can use these images as your desktop image by locating them and dragging them one at a time into the Desktop page in System Preferences.
To track them down, hit Command-Shift-G from your desktop to open the Finder’s Go to Folder window. Next, enter this path:
/Library/Screen Savers/Default Collections/
Browse through the folders and then drag an image into the Desktop window of System Preferences.

Stacks are quite the handy addition to your Mac’s dock and the good people at Mac OS X Hints figured out a way to make them even more useful by creating a stack that automatically contains your most recent applications.
These can of course be found under the Apple menu as well but it’s much more convenient to have them right in the dock.
Recent Items Stack
To accomplish this feat, simply copy and paste the line below into Terminal.
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'
Once you’ve completed that command, type “killall Dock” to relaunch your dock with the new stack.
Use the snippet below in Terminal to activate a really nice looking list view in stacks complete with icons and a scroll bar.
defaults write com.apple.dock use-new-list-stack -bool YES
As with the previous example, use “killall Dock” to make the change take effect.
Stacks List View
If you click and drag the little divider bar in your dock, you can resize the entire dock without going to System Preferences. Hold down option to make proportional changes.
Resizing Your Dock
If you’re like me and have dock magnification permanently turned off, you can temporarily activate it by holding down ⌃⇧ while hovering over the dock.
Force Magnify Dock
One of the most well known and widely used terminal commands. Use the snippet below to make hidden files visible in the Finder.
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Set it back to “NO” to re-hide the files.
There’s Nothing You Can See That Can’t Be Seen
If you find yourself constantly embarrassed or distracted by your messy desktop habits, download Camouflage, a free app that quickly hides everything on your desktop.
Hide Your Desktop Debris
There are several applications in OS X that allow you to choose or create a different library on startup. Simply hold down the option key when you click on an app in the dock to see a window similar to the one below.
Choose a New Library
Use the previous tip to create a new library for an application and place that library in your Dropbox folder. Then choose this library with the same application on any other Macs that you own and all the application data will remain synced between the two Macs!
This trick is completely free, just be sure to watch the size of the libraries you are syncing as it’s really easy to eat up all your Dropbox space.
It’s easy to miss that you can actually add item shortcuts to the top of your Finder windows. Simply drag the application into the space to the left of the Spotlight field.
Finder Window Shortcuts
Using GeekTool you can add all sorts of functionality to your desktop. It’s everything Dashboard should’ve been.
Pimp Your Desktop
If it’s all a bit too technical for you, check out Yahoo Widgets instead. They’re just like Dashboard widgets only you have the option to display them right on your desktop.
If you have files that you often use as templates but want to prevent accidental replacement of the original file, you can use the “stationery pad” option. Enabling this on a specific file makes it so that when you try to open that file, the Finder creates a duplicate and opens that instead.
Stationery
To find this option, get info on a file with ⌘+I and click the “Stationery pad” checkbox under the labels in the “General” section.
While Quick Look is launched, hold down the option key to turn your cursor into a magnifying glass. Then click to zoom in. Hold shift and option to zoom out.
Quick Look Zoom
Have you ever wanted to set a screensaver as your desktop background? Just use the following command in Terminal:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background
When you’ve had enough fun, hit Control+C to return things back to normal.
Screensaver Wallpaper
When you’re looking at your Twitter timeline in Safari, click on the RSS icon in the URL bar to see the timeline as an RSS feed. You may need to add the login to Keychain for it to work properly.
Then copy and paste that feed into your RSS reader screensaver in System Preferences and voila! A free, continually updating tweet-filled screensaver.
Twitter Screensaver
The Safari Inspector is an impressive suite of development tools for examining and debugging web pages. It’s hidden by default but you can use the following command in Terminal to enable it:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitDeveloperExtras -bool true
Enable Safari Inspector
Sometimes your Mac will simply refuse to do something that seems completely routine and normal. This can be anything from installing and running a new application to duplicating files in the Finder.
When you’ve tried everything else and are at your wit’s end as to how to solve the problem, try opening up Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder) and repairing your disk permissions.
You’d be surprised at just how many mysterious problems can be solved with this single step!
Repairing Permissions
It used to be the case that you had to set your time zone manually in OS X. However, with Snow Leopard you can choose to have your Mac guess your time zone by attempting to grab your current location.
Automatic Time Zone
You can also use a free app called Jet Lag that runs in the background and constantly makes sure that your computer is set to the proper timezone.
If Grandma has been having trouble following that tiny cursor around on the screen, open up the Mouse & Trackpad section under Universal Access in System Preferences and crank up that sucker’s size.
This is also an awesome trick to play on any friends not savvy enough to know how to turn it off.
Giant Cursor
The screen sharing utility has a number of hidden features that beef up that really beef up the experience. This includes a number of options for adjusting quality and allowed input on each side of the screen share.
To turn on these options, throw the following code into terminal:
defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing \
'NSToolbar Configuration ControlToolbar' -dict-add 'TB Item Identifiers' \
'(Scale,Control,Share,Curtain,Capture,FullScreen,GetClipboard,SendClipboard,Quality)'
Better Screen Sharing
To read more about what all the added buttons will do, check out MacWorld’s explanation.
Now that iCal has CalDAV support, syncing your iCal calendars with Google Calendar is as simple as typing in your Google account info under “accounts” in the iCal preferences window.
Syncing Google Calendar and iCal
In Safari 5 there are several commands that can be undone with a quick ⌘+Z beyond typing mistakes. For instance, if you get carried away while closing tabs and accidentally close one that you wanted to keep open, just undo it! Nifty no?
Many users have abandoned OS X’s dashboard functionality either completely or in favor of alternatives like GeekTool. If you never want to see your dashboard again, you can kill it completely with the following Terminal command.
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
To bring it back, change the “YES” to “NO”.
Time Machine is an excellent utility that makes backing up all the data on your Mac extremely easy. However, there’s so much emphasis on making this task easy that there are very few customizable options. Most notably, you can’t control how often Time Machine runs an automated backup.
Fortunately, there are two free applications that remedy this problem. Time Machine Editor and TimeMachineScheduler are both great solutions for customizing your backup intervals.
Scheduling Time Machine
This is one of the most vital tricks in the whole list and is well known by most Mac users. If an application freezes on you, hit ⌘⌥+esc (command + option + escape) to bring up the Force Quit menu.
Just select the troublesome application and kill it to fix the freeze (all unsaved data will be lost). Right clicking on most frozen applications in the dock will give you the same option.
Force Quit
This shortcut is known by almost everyone but more than likely ignored by most. I’ve recently started using it and now find it to be an integral part of my OS X experience.
Hitting ⌘⌥+H to hide everything but the current application is a quick and easy way to start over and give yourself some breathing room.
For those college students out there who like to check out the scores on ESPN.com during lectures, there’s a shortcut that will help you hide your obvious inattention as the professor walks by.
Hit ⌃⇧+eject to immediately dim your screen to zero brightness. This will effectively put your display to sleep so that inquiring eyes find only darkness. Be careful though, moving your mouse or hitting any key will bring it all right back up.
The most recent iteration of Safari has a new extension system similar to that of Firefox. To install an extension, simply download the file and double click it.
Force Quit
OS X allows you to create a custom keyboard shortcut for any menu item in just about every application. To access and create these, check out Snow Leopard’s new and improved keyboard shortcut manager in System Preferences.
Assigning Custom Shortcuts
This is another shortcut that’s clearly listed in OS X but is likely missed by many users. To paste text that matches the destination formatting into any of Apple’s applications (doesn’t work in most third party apps) , use ⌘⇧⌥+V.
Gmail automatically organizes all your incoming mail into conversations so that when you receive a reply, it’s easy to scroll through and see the entire conversation.
Apple Mail actually has a similar feature that groups email messages into threads. Each thread is a collapsible collection of messages from a single back and forth conversation.
Mail Threads
To activate message threading, click on “View” in Mail and select “Organize by Thread.”

It is widely known that the loading time of websites has a major influence on the overall user experience. If on the age of 56K Modems people would be willing to wait even half a minute for a website to load this time span has been drastically reduced lately. The are market researches, in fact, confirming that users will just skip a site altogether if it fails to load within 4 seconds.
The first part of the “Speed Up Your Site” series will cover how to optimize images. Images can create an extra load on the size of your pages, specially if you forget to optimize them. Photoshop and similar image editing software include a feature called “Save for the web”. Always use this feature since it will reduce the image size and load time substantially.
If you do not use an image editing software or if you want something more practical you can use this online image optimizer from Dynamic Drive. It will automatically optimize gif, png and jpeg images, and it will also convert file formats if needed.
JPEG: Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. This format was created for photographs and fine art-work. You should use JPEG images whenever you are displaying a photo or a true-color image. Notice that if you are using compression to reduce the file size you should use a 50% compression rate for optimal results.
GIF: Stands for Graphics Interchange Format. The GIF format is connected with the history of the Internet, mainly because of its small size. JPEG images support millions of colors while GIF ones will integrate a maximum of 256 colors. You should use this format for flat-color images like logos, buttons or text images. GIF is also the format of choice for animated images.
PNG: Stands for Portable Network Graphics. The PNG format was created specifically for the Internet, with the objective of replacing GIF images. The main advantage of PNG images over GIF ones is that they support 24-bit colors and alpha transparency. That said not all the browsers recognize some of its features. You should use the PNG format for simple images that require more than 256 colors.
Cascading Style Sheets make websites much more efficient because they allow the browsers to cache style-related information from the .css file directly, removing the need to read that information every time a single page is loaded. Even if Style Sheets are naturally more efficient than HTML tables you can still optimize the CSS code to make your website cleaner and faster.
First of all try to locate dispersed code and aggregate it together. For instance instead of:
margin-top: 10px;
margin-right: 20px;
margin-bottom: 10px;
margin-left: 20px;
you should use:
margin: 10px 20px 10px 20px;
Instead of:
<p>A paragraph of decorated text</p>
<p>Second paragraph</p>
<p>Third paragraph</p>
<p>Forth paragraph</p>
you should use:
<div>
<p>A paragraph of decorated text</p>
<p>Second paragraph</p>
<p>Third paragraph</p>
<p>Forth paragraph</p>
</div>
Secondly you can also try a CSS optimizer tool like CleanCSS. Those tools are supposed to merge similar selectors, remove useless properties, remove whitespace and so on.
When a server opens a link in the form of “http://www.domain.com/about” it will need to figure what kind of file or webpage is contained on that address, wasting time on the process. If instead of using that link you include a slash (“/”) at the end like “http://www.domain.com/about/” the web server will already know that the link points to a directory, reducing the time to load the page.
The improvement on the loading time of links ending with a slash will not be astronomical, but when it comes to speeding up a website every small bit helps!
This is a very important factor that many people (including myself until some time ago) tend to overlook. When you use images or tables on your pages you should always include the height and width tags. If the browser does not see those tags it will need to figure the size of the image, then load the image and then load the rest of the page. Here is an example of code containing those tags:
<img id="moon" height="200" width="450" src="http://www.domain.com/moon.png" alt="moon image" />
When the height and width tags are included the browser will automatically know the size of the image. As a consequence it will be able to hold a place for the image and load the rest of the page contemporaneously. Apart from the improvement on the load time of the page this method is also more user friendly since the visitor can start reading the text or other information while the image is being downloaded.
When a user is opening your website every object on the page (e.g. images or scripts) will require a round trip to the server. Those HTTP requests will delay the response time of your site, and if you are loading dozens of objects this delay can add up to several seconds.
The first step to reduce the delay from HTTP requests is to reduce the number of objects on your website. Get rid of unnecessary images, headers, styling features and the like. If possible you can also combine 2 or more adjacent images into a single one.
Secondly make sure that your requests for external files or scripts are combined in a single location. For example instead of using three CSS files to create the layout of your page:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/body.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/side.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/footer.css" />
You should use a single one with all the styling information:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/style.css" />
1. SEM: Stands for Search Engine Marketing, and as the name implies it involves marketing services or products via search engines. SEM is divided into two main pillars: SEO and PPC. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is the practice of optimizing websites to make their pages appear in the organic search results. PPC stands for Pay-Per-Click, and it is the practice of purchasing clicks from search engines. The clicks come from sponsored listings in the search results.
2. Backlink: Also called inlink or simply link, it is an hyperlink on another website pointing back to your own website. Backlinks are important for SEO because they affect directly the PageRank of any web page, influencing its search rankings.
3. PageRank: PageRank is an algorithm that Google uses to estimate the relative important of pages around the web. The basic idea behind the algorithm is the fact that a link from page A to page B can be seen as a vote of trust from page A to page B. The higher the number of links (weighted to their value) to a page, therefore, the higher the probability that such page is important.
4. Linkbait: A linkbait is a piece of web content published on a website or blog with the goal of attracting as many backlinks as possible (in order to improve one’s search rankings). Usually it’s a written piece, but it can also be a video, a picture, a quiz or anything else. A classic example of linkbait are the “Top 10″ lists that tend to become popular on social bookmarking sites.
5. Link farm. A link farm is a group of websites where every website links to every other website, with the purpose of artificially increasing the PageRank of all the sites in the farm. This practice was effective in the early days of search engines, but today they are seeing as a spamming technique (and thus can get you penalized).
6. Anchor text: The anchor text of a backlink is the text that is clickable on the web page. Having keyword rich anchor texts help with SEO because Google will associate these keywords with the content of your website. If you have a weight loss blog, for instance, it would help your search rankings if some of your backlinks had “weight loss” as their anchor texts.
7. NoFollow: The nofollow is a link attribute used by website owners to signal to Google that they don’t endorse the website they are linking to. This can happen either when the link is created by the users themselves (e.g., blog comments), or when the link was paid for (e.g., sponsors and advertisers). When Google sees the nofollow attribute it will basically not count that link for the PageRank and search algorithms.
8. Link Sculpting: By using the nofollow attribute strategically webmasters were able to channel the flow of PageRank within their websites, thus increasing the search rankings of desired pages. This practice is no longer effective as Google recently change how it handles the nofollow attribute.
9. Title Tag: The title tag is literally the title of a web page, and it’s one of the most important factors inside Google’s search algorithm. Ideally your title tag should be unique and contain the main keywords of your page. You can see the title tag of any web page on top of the browser while navigating it.
10. Meta Tags: Like the title tag, meta tags are used to give search engines more information regarding the content of your pages. The meta tags are placed inside the HEAD section of your HTML code, and thus are not visible to human visitors.
11. Search Algorithm: Google’s search algorithm is used to find the most relevant web pages for any search query. The algorithm considers over 200 factors (according to Google itself), including the PageRank value, the title tag, the meta tags, the content of the website, the age of the domain and so on.
12. SERP: Stands for Search Engine Results Page. It’s basically the page you’ll get when you search for a specific keyword on Google or on other search engines. The amount of search traffic your website will receive depends on the rankings it will have inside the SERPs.
13. Sandbox: Google basically has a separate index, the sandbox, where it places all newly discovered websites. When websites are on the sandbox, they won’t appear in the search results for normal search queries. Once Google verifies that the website is legitimate, it will move it out of the sandbox and into the main index.
14. Keyword Density: To find the keyword density of any particular page you just need to divide the number of times that keyword is used by the total number of words in the page. Keyword density used to be an important SEO factor, as the early algorithms placed a heavy emphasis on it. This is not the case anymore.
15. Keyword Stuffing: Since keyword density was an important factor on the early search algorithms, webmasters started to game the system by artificially inflating the keyword density inside their websites. This is called keyword stuffing. These days this practice won’t help you, and it can also get you penalized.
16. Cloaking. This technique involves making the same web page show different content to search engines and to human visitors. The purpose is to get the page ranked for specific keywords, and then use the incoming traffic to promote unrelated products or services. This practice is considering spamming and can get you penalized (if not banned) on most search engines.
